Docufiction Ulysses From Ghana

Docufiction Ulysses from Ghana is inspired by the play Slaves written by Ghanaian author Mohamed Ben Abdallah. Transatlantic trade, depicted in the play, marked one of the darkest pages in the recent history of the world. Docufiction also weaves into the story of the play commentaries of contemporary Ghanaians on novel forms of modern-day slavery, as well as vestiges of racial discrimination across the globe as illustrated in Black Lives Matter movement. The film looks at how catharsis can be reached, and whilst not forgetting the cruel treatment of slaves, it looks forward to a better world where prejudices will no longer prevail.

The creative team has assembled a fine group of actors linked with the Ghanaian Centre of the International Theatre Institute of UNESCO with support of the Government of Ghana. In 2019 Ghana marked 400 years of the beginnings of the slave trade when the first African slaves were landed in Jamestown, Virginia, USA. It subsequently launched a campaign “The Year of Return” resulting in visits by about one million people, connecting thus West Africa with its diaspora, and encouraging those who wanted to retrace their roots to settle in Africa – the opposite of contemporary migration patterns.

Following success of Ulysses from Ghana, which is now destined to be shown at major festivals across the world, a plan is drawn to shoot eight more docufictions in selected destinations in South and Central America, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Future Docufictions

Following the success of Ulysses from Ghana, the first in the planned series of docufiction films, producers and director are approaching studio partners for the continuation of this series in 8 further countries. Each sequel will follow a theatrical narrative, just as Ulysses from Ghana was inspired by the play The Slaves, but will weave in commentaries relevant to today’s world and contemporary society.

The following locations and countries were selected both for artistic merits and also because the core team has strong political and artistic connections to guarantee success in shooting of docufiction.
